    Notes
    • Dave Howard's notes:

      Notes for BERNARD HOWARD:

My Uncle Bernie was always a loving uncle. He always treated me as an idividual and not as a little kid. He would talk my dad, Harry, into going fishing and I got to go along.

One of my favorite memories of an exciting experience with him was when I was about 8 he and I had to find our way from El Monte, CA to the Silver Lake District of Los Angeles. It was a family get together at my mother's sister's, Loretta's, home. Bernie had never been there. I had been there once. I was his guide. He was patient and loving all the way and we arrived.

Bernie served in the Navy during World War II on board a ship as a baker. He saw combat action and was wounded in the leg. He was a great Navy man and had an amazing number of tattoos. We children loved to see them. They were colorful but the coup de grace were the hinges on the insides of his elbows.

From time to time he and Harry would be in business together. Gas station, auto parts, and used industrial equipment dealilng.

When he and Marie moved from Chicago they first lived upstairs in the house next door to us. He finally bought a home in Azuza, CA where they lived for many years.

I remember when both Alan J. and Martin were born. They were the light of his life.

Bernie and Marie divorced. Bernie and Barbara fell in love and married. She had been Harry's secretary (now they are called aministrative assistants) at his machinery dealership.

Bernie and Barbara built a successful heavy machinery dealership buisiness. He told me the secret to his success was to make 1% on every deal. He would hold up one finger and give me a wink when he said that because we both knew that 1% to him neans 100%.

Bernie was always a heavy smoker. He would tell us that it was a great pleasure and was not harmful. Perhaps the smoking contributed to his pancreatic cancer. They operated on him but to no avail. When he knew he only had a few months left he bought a motor home. He and Barbara spent his last days driving around together and visiting friends and relatives.

He came to Saratoga, CA and visited me and my family.

      He died way too early.
