DEATH: Abraham Leander Jones died, at the age of 37, from complications resulting from a broken leg. A limb had fallen on his leg as he was attempting to chop down a tree. In order to "set" the leg, chloroform was used as an anesthetic. When Abraham didn't respond as quickly as the doctor felt he should have following surgery, an attempt was made to revive him with mercury. Whether it was the chloroform, the mercury, or a combination of the two, Abraham did not survive. He left his widow with seven young children to raise--and one on the way; Jane Amanda was born eight months later.
