"John Ross was born about 1710/11 and married Lydia Hollingsworth at Opequon, [Frederick County, Virginia], December 16, 1735. The marriage was required to be registered at the Nottingham Monthly Meeting; thus records of it ended up in Chester County, Pennsylvania; Cecil County, Maryland; and Frederick County, Virginia. [John Ross] died in 1749.
Administration records, deed records, etc. show a son, Alexander, who came of age in 1760 (thus born in 1739), who as his eldest son and heir acquired most of his inheritance at that time.. He is known to have had other children. His wife, Lydia was named guardian of son, Alexander, August 8, 1749. At that age he could have been apprenticed and placed under guardianship of another adult male relative but the court decided he could remain with his mother.
A younger son, David Ross identified as "son of John Ross, deceased" married Catherine Thomas, "daughter of Enos Thomas, deceased" 20th December at the Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Frederick County, Virginia. Enos Thomas was apparently the brother of Evan Thomas who had married John Ross's sister, Albinah Ross.
David and Catherine (Thomas) Ross had at least three children:
Enos Ross who married Lydia Reese, daughter of David and Martha Reese of Berkeley County, 15 Feb 1798 at Hopewell;
Rachel Ross who married Joshua Hunt, son of Robert and Abigail Hunt 13th November, 1794;
Phebe Ross who married Jonathan Butcher of Alexandria, son of Jonathan and Ann Butcher, deceased of Bucks Co., PA, on 4th September, 1806 in the Hopewell MM."
