      p. 16: "[In regard to the settlement of Jackson, Clay, IN,] although surveyed and the lands made subject to entry as early as 1816, the congressional township at a later date organized by the civil authorities and named Jackson was not . . . occupied until 1828 or 1830. Among those who occupied this territory at about this time were James Green, John Sturdivant, John Tucker, Thomas Wheeler, Arthur Helton, Esau Presnell, George B. Zenor, George Lucas, Levi Cromwell, Amos Hedge, Samuel Stigler, Henry Tilley, Jacob Gibbons, the Moores, the Bolins, the Lowdermilks, the Slacks, and others. At the expiration of a quarter of a century from the time of the white man's coming into this territory, the lands were all taken, the last entry being made in 1853. . . . The first orchard planted in this territory was set out by JohnTucker. Amos Hedge, William Slack, and Stephen Lowdermilk started their orchards at about the same time. Stephen Lowdermilk was the pioneer Justice of the Peace in this county."

pp. 266-268: "Amos W. Hedge, a native of Pennsylvania, born at Harrisburg, 16 Dec 1796, the family emigrating to Columbus, Ohio in his childhood, where he continued to live until grown to manhood, when in 1816, he came out into Wabash [River] country, thence to Harrison County, IN where on the 7th day of March 1822, he married Jane Wright, who was born 1 May 1781. In 1834 he came to Clay County, IN and bought forty acres [267] of land on the west side of Birch Creek, in the Witty neighborhood, where he lived until the following year, when in the month of August, he bought the Levi Cromwell place, on the east side of the creek, now owned and occupied by A.H. Wright. . . . The subject of this biographical sketch was an earnest and vigilant worker in the cause of the pioneer church--one of the earliest United Brethren preachers in the county, having organized a society at the Zenor schoolhouse at a very early date. . . . Amos W. Hedge died 1 Apr 1874, aged 77 years, 6 months, and 15 days, his wife having died many years before."
