Notes |
- Cora recalled her youth fondly, yet filled with memories of the absolute hard work they had to endure just to survive. She told daughter Laverne a story from when she was about ten years of age. This would have been around 1908 or 1909. Her mother, Anna Pfeifer Kumrow, would hitch up the horse and buggy and drive it herself to the market in nearby Batavia for their groceries. Groceries, remember, consisted of flour, sugar, spices, the basic things one could not make or grow on the farm. She would trade the farm's eggs for the goods.
Plymouth, Wisconsin was the destination for hard goods. When shoes, coats, hats and such were needed, again the buggy would be hitched to the horse and off they would go. She would ride up to Adell and there hitch the horses in an open shed. Hay was provided for the horses while the driver would be away. Anna would take a train to Plymouth and there spend the day shopping for goods that could not be made at home. Once finished, the process would be reversed. It was generally an all day affair.
Along with her sister, Gertrude (as they were the oldest), she would be required to do tasks such as washing dishes, assist with the ironing, darning socks, scrubbing the floors. Even at the tender age of eight or nine, everyone pitched in with the household chores.
Cora and her son Willis remained on the family homestead after Arno passed away in 1971. They stayed there until 1980 when they moved to Random Lake, Wisconsin.
Cora was the penultimate homemaker and matriarch, content to raise her six children and provide the backbone of the Stolper and Kumrow clan until her passing in 1994. The evidence of the strength of her character was the fact that virtually all of her descendants were present at her Rite of Christian Burial at St John Lutheran Church in Sherman Center.
