The following obit for George appeared in the September 20, 1956 Journal:
George Curtis Pifer, 55, well known contractor and builder of Middleway, died Sunday night in Winchester Memorial Hospital. Winchester, VA where he had been a patient for two weeks although ill for six weeks. Born in Frederick County, Va., he was the son of Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Crisman Pifer and the late Charles Preston Pifer.
He was a member of the Methodist Church at Middleway and the Truminar Lodge No 117. A.P. and A/M, Middleway, which will conduct graveside services as a part of the last rites and those members will serve as bearers. The bearers will be Earl Smith, Harry Shirley, Alton Grove, Paul Ring, Victor Blue and Murphy Schaull.
His wife, Mrs. Enda Wenonah Pifer, survives at home with four daughters - Mrs. Robert Leight, near Ridgeway; Mrs. Andrew Longerbeam, Mrs. Alchard L Nicodemus and Mrs. Edna Mae Pifer of Middleway; four sons, Mason M, William C and George Wayne of Middleway; and Frances E of Ft. Jackson, S.C.; tow sisters, - Mrs. Thomas Eddy of Fullerton, Md.; and Mrs. Harry Nicely of Middleway; five brothers, Giles of Baltimore, Md.; J.R. Luther, Ernest and Olin of Martinsburg; and a number of grandchildren.
The body remained at the Melvin T Strider Colonial Funeral Home until noon Wednesday when it was taken to the Methodist Church in Middleway for services at 2:30 (DST). The Rev. Sam F Butcher of the Jefferson Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in Middleway.
