- Gottlieb and Louise were married in Silesia. Together they had eight children. Their first two children, Auguste and Friedrich, were born in Emilienthal, Silesia. Only two of the eight, Emma and Adam, survived to adulthood. Accroding to a story handed down from Gottlieb to his son Henry through grandson Charles, Gottlieb was chosen by King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia to serve in his Royal Guards as he was quite tall. His height providing an imposing sight. The story says that he suffered a chest injury and was no longer able to serve the Kaiser.
Gottlieb the Port of New York on July 1853 with his wife and two children. These children passed away on 20 July 1853 and 31 July 1853 respectively probably due to the rigors of the trans-Atlantic passage.
He filed his intent to become a citizen on 14 September 1854 in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin and was naturalized 14 January 1879 (#1419).
In 1859 he and Louise re-located to the Town of Abbott (now Town Sherman) in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Gottlieb tried farming at the "Fred Janke farm" located E1/2 of NW 1/4 of Section 19 there. We believe when he lost his wife in 1863, he went to live in Milwaukee with his two children a few years later. It was there he met Johanna Schmidt Schofer, a widow with three children. They married and had four more children, three of whom lived to adulthood.
In Milwaukee he did various things like coal delivery and working in a wood shop during the 1880's. In 1881 the family moved to Kansas to help ease his asthma. He returned to farming there. In 1897 he and Johanna retired to Salina, Kansas.
Gottlieb died at his home on Walnut and Phillips Streets Saturday afternoon at five o'clock after an illness of a week. He had been an asthma sufferer. This, complicated with dropsy, resulted fatally. He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn. (From the Salina Daily, 12 January 1903).
