      "HAROLD O. BERGE (d. 1963)

      Harold O. (Hal) Berge, 49, of 289 Dahl Pl., Fond du Lac, died at 8:24 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac, where he had been a patient the last five weeks. . . .

      Survivors include his wife, four sons, Thomas, James, John and David all of Fond du Lac; his mother, Mrs. Andrew Berge of Valders, and two sisters, Mrs. Andrew Kosowski of Chicago, Ill. And Mrs. Walter Busse of Sheboygan.

      Harold O. (Hal) Berge, 49, former secretary-treasurer
      of the Manitowoc County Baseball League. Burial will be in Lutheran
      Cemetery at Valders. Mr. Berge died of cancer.

      A native of Valders, and widely known throughout amateur baseball circles in
      Manitowoc and Sheboygan Counties, he had been supervisor of assessments in the Fond du Lac district of the Wisconsin Department of Taxation since 1960. In that capacity, he had appeared personally each fall before Manitowoc and Sheboygan County Boards to explain equalized valuation statistics of real and personal properties in the two counties.

      Mr. Berge was born Nov. 23, 1913, a son of Mrs. Mabel Gilbertson Berge and the late Andrew Berge. He attended Valders schools and married Florence Wehrwein of Newton, December 16, 1939.

      A former amateur ballplayer himself in the Valders-Gjerpen area, he served as a County Baseball League official for 18 years, during which time he provided area newspapers with weekly sports releases on league activities.

      He was also a part-time scout for the Milwaukee Braves until moving to Fond do Lac in 1960. He had been an assessor for the Town of Liberty in which he farmed."
