Notes |
- Johanna came to the United States at the age of ten. She lived with her grandfather in Buffalo, New York. Her mother did not survive their Atlantic crossing. She later moved to Wisconsin where she met and married John Schofer. John was a bugler on the merchant ship, "Lady Elgin" on the Great Lakes. He drowned in Lake Michigan while serving in this capacity. They had six children.
From her obituary, Johanna died in Salina just before midnight at her home at the corner of Walnut and Phillips Streets. The funeral services were conducted partly in German. (Salina, Kansas Daily, 6 January 1905).
Her maiden is give variously as Schmitt or Schmidt. We chose the latter as it appears more frequently than the former.
