    Notes
    • Find-A-Grave:

"The son of Andrew & Rebecca Bollinger Diehl. In 1860, he was a butcher living in York Borough and also tended bar at his father's Indian Chief Hotel. He stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York 24 Aug 1861, with Co. K, 87th PA Inf, at the rank of private. Captured at the battle of Carter's Woods June 15, 1863, and imprisoned at Belle Isle in Richmond. Exchanged and then deserted from Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD, returning to the regiment 22 Oct 1863. Went absent without leave July 1864, but returned before being labeled a deserter. Honorably discharged in York 13 Oct 1864.

In 1866, he was knifed in a street fight by David McCreary, a man who had received a dishonorable discharge from the 87th PA Inf. For a time, it was feared Diehl would not survive his wounds. He did survive and, perhaps for that reason, Diehl moved to New Hampshire, but could not run far enough to escape trouble. In 1873, he shot and killed Robert E. Blair in a Nashua, New Hampshire barroom. The dispute was over a woman who was not only Diehl's mistress, but his partner in a brothel. He pled guilty to 2nd degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years hard labor. His health deteriorated while in prison and, when it became apparent he would likely die, he received a pardon dated 22 Jul 1879. His mother brought him back to York 'in emaciated condition' [York Gazette 1 Aug 1879]. He died shortly thereafter."
