"Woodlawn National Cemetery is a constant reminder to Chemung County that nearly 3,000 Southern soldiers sleep there. There are 36 trenches extending across the plot, north to south, all occupied by Confederate dead. All thirteen Confederate states have soldiers buried here. North Carolina has the most soldiers, with 1,208."

DEAL, M. M. Co A, 12th NC Infantry. Enlisted 11-1-63 at Catawba Co, NC. Private. POW 5-12-64 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. Imprisoned at Point Lookout Prison, MD. Transferred 8-10-64 to Elmira Prison, NY. died 4-20-65 of pneumonia while a POW at Elmira Prison, NY. He is interred at Woodlawn National Cemetery."
