      "Robert Ell Modesitt, 90, died peacefully in his sleep Sept. 12, 2010, in Phoenix, Ariz.

      Born in Clay County, he graduated from Staunton High School and then Purdue University.

      Mr. Modesitt and his wife, Eva Mae (Wright), who pre-deceased him in 2006, had lived in Phoenix since 1975.

      He moved to Arizona in retirement following 32 years of employment with the Soil Conservation Service, United States Department of Agriculture.

      Mr. Modesitt was a veteran of World War II and retired from the Army Reserve as a Major. He was a committed Lions Club member for many years.

      Mr. Modesitt is survived by his children Jed Modesitt, Clear Brook, Va., Jody M. Glenn, Phoenix, Ariz., and Cheri Modesitt, Melbourne, Australia, as well as three grandsons.

      Mr. Modesitt's inurnment took place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona with military honors."
