They left Putnam County, Indiana on September 11, 1855 and arrived in Western Iowa on October 22, 1855. They made the trip in wagons, traveling on the "Old Mormon Trace." William and his son, John Green Jones amassed about 1,000 acres of land together over the years.

William Hardin Jones served as a judge for one year, County Auditor for one year, Justice of the Peace for about twenty-one years He was also a minister in the "Primitive Baptist Church" and was secretary to that church for over forty-five years.

The name of the church was to be called Council Bluffs Church. The church continued to meet at the school, or in homes, until May 1864, when they built a new church building on ground donated by Brother Hardin Jones. In 1865 the church sent delegates to be admitted into the Western Association of Iowa, and in 1871 the church hosted the association. In 1877 the church entered the Missouri Valley Association, which was formed that year, by churches lettered out of the Western Association. Council Bluffs Church gradually grew in number, and in 1931 reported 112 members in the statistics of the Missouri Valley Association.
Ministers who were ordained by the church include: Elders William L. Jones (1865); Isaac Skelton (1877); Joseph Moss (1889); J. M. Arledge (1898); Edward M. Keeney (1905); William M. Jones (1910); Edgar Carter (1922); William T. Branson; Thomas Pile (1954); and John T. Anderson (1978).

Ind. where they lived from 1817 to 1826 - then moved on to Putman Co. Ind. Here Hardin was married to Aseneth DeWeese, Daughter of David and Elizabeth DeWeese, who were also from Ky., but moved to Putnam Co. also. Her parents, along with Allen Jones are listed in the early history of that county, and were among the earliest settlers. Others who settled in Washington Twp near by are these names that are know to be associated with the Jones family - John Reel, Andy and William Reel, David Jones. Also living in the same township were the Boone family - Squire, Samuel and Moses Boone, brothers of the famous Daniel Boone and 'young Daniel Boone, son of the famous Pioneer.

A member of any of the conservative, independent Baptist church congregations in the United States that oppose centralized administrative associations and organized mission societies. In the 1820s and '30s some Baptists began to protest the educational and mission societies that had been formed by some of the Baptist associations. They maintained that, since mission societies, Sunday schools, and central church organizations were not mentioned in the New Testament, there should never be any. Many churches withdrew from established Baptist associations and continued as independent congregations.

The Primitive Baptists are strict Calvinists who believe that only those elected by God will be saved. They accept the verbal infallibility of the Bible and expect the Second Coming of Christ. Ministers require no special training, because Primitive Baptists believe that God can call anyone to be a minister. Missionaries are self-supporting. Because of their independence and lack of any central organizations, it is difficult to determine the number of Primitive Baptists.

HARDIN JONES, farmer, P.O. Loveland, was born in 1810 in Kentucky on the Green River, Casey County; then moved with his father to Orange County, Indiana, in 1817 and then to Putnam County, Indiana, and remained there till the fall of 1855, when he came here.

All of his family came at the same time, except one daughter, who came before. His only son now living has been living by him ever since, their farms adjoining each other. He first bought 280 acres of Calvin Beebe, paying $2,650 and since that he has added to his farm. He and son together have since had over 1,000 acres. Our subject now has 435 acres. Their farming is stock and grain.

Mr. Jones served as County Judge one year, Auditor one year, Justice of the Peace for about twenty-one years. He was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace six days after he was eligible, and has been in county and township offices of some kind ever since till within a year.

In moving here, they came in wagons, starting September 11 and arriving October 22, 1855. They camped out whenever night overtook them, and followed what was called the old Mormon trace. He is Democratic in politics. His first vote was for Gen. Jackson. He is a member of the Baptist Church.

He was first married, October 18, 1832 to Asenath DuWeese. She died February 12, 1860. He was afterward married to Mrs. Mary Skelton, October 18, 1860. She died in March, 1881. He was again married to Mrs. Brunetta Moss. He had five children by his first wife; both his other wives had five children each when he married them, and he had no children by either of them.

ILLNESS: Stricken with paralysis --- Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil, September 2, 1886
HARDIN JONES, of Norwalk, was in Council Bluffs Tuesday. Mr. Jones came to Council Bluffs in 1855. He has continuously lived in the county since his arrival in the west. He was judge of Pottawattamie County court in 1886. He has been the husband of four wives, and has several interesting sons and daughters who lend comfort to Mr. Jones' declining years. He has recently been stricken with paralysis in his lower limbs, but is not suffering much distress from its effect. Hardin Jones has friends all over the county and western Iowa, and is a man of merit both socially and morally.

THE OBITUARY OF Hardin Jones Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil, March 24, 1887

      Hardin Jones
All of the old settlers of this county will regret to hear of the death of Mr. Hardin Jones, who died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Joseph Moss, in Loveland on Sunday last. Mr. Jones suffered a paralytic stroke two years ago, from which he never recovered.
He had reached the ripe age of 77 years, having been born in Casey County, Kentucky in1810. He came to Iowa in 1854, settling in this county, where he has ever since resided.
He was a man of strong character and very positive in his convictions, and when once his mind was made up it was not easily changed.
He was a good citizen of Pottawattamie for a third of a century, a strong democrat all of his life, and a steady member of the Baptist church for fifty years.
The funeral took place at Loveland, and he was buried there.
