    • Full Civil War Pension File: "National Archives, Soldier's Certificate No. 335,992 Jefferson Baughman, Private, Co. E 51st Indiana Volunteers Infantry." (Can No. 6939, Bundle No. 31). This file contains physicians' certificates and records of examinations, affidavits by Jefferson Baughman and his relatives and friends, and letters from officials in the Department of Interior, all of which relate to requests for increase of his pension because of increasing disability from rheumatism and heart disease.

"Declaration for Original Invalid Pension, Clay, IN, 11 Dec 1884, . . . Jefferson Baughman, who was enrolled 21 Sep 1864, Co E, 51 Regt, Indiana . . . honorably discharged Nashville TN 14 Jun 1865. . . . Age 48; height 5 feet 8 inches; complexion Dark; hair Dark; eyes Brown.

That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at Huntsville AL, on or about 18 Dec 1864, he contracted rheumatism from cold and exposure from which he has never recovered. He claims a pension on rheumatism. . . . That since leaving the service this applicant has lived in Brazil IN, and his occupation has been that of a farmer. . . ."

Surgeon's Certificate: "Date of examination 11 Feb 1885 . . . Has pain in left arm and shoulder and left hip and leg. He is affected chiefly in winter and damp weather. Last winter he could not do anything, could only walk by aid of crutches. In summer, he gets better and can do light work very well. . . ."

"War Department, Adjutant General's Office, 7 May 1885. . . . No evidence of alleged disability. Name not [entered] as sick on company morning reports, commencing prior to enlistment and terminating subsequent to discharge."

"12 Nov 1885. I was with Jefferson Baughman during the time he was in the service. To the best of my recollection on or about 25 Dec 1864, when the Army was pursuing [General] Hood near Pulaski Tn, [Baughman] first complained of rheumatism in his right hip, I think. He was generally able to march, but once or twice he fell behind and came into camp a little later. . . . After he came home from the Army, he has worked at different kinds of work. He worked for a few years in the coal mines, then with another man ran a sawmill for several years. He told me, I believe in August last, that he was working at the Brazil IN Rolling Mill. He has a very good property of his own and makes a comfortable living. Respectfully, Job Riddell."
