Notes |
- E-mail from Jane Deal, 14 Jun 2011:
"I am a great-great-granddaughter of David and Lovina McRee. And, just to clarify, he did not die in Cherokee, North Carolina - he died and is buried in Murphy, North Carolina which is in Cherokee County. He died while he and his family were enroute by wagon from their farm in Ducktown, TN (which he had just sold) to Alexander County NC where his wife's family lived. He moved his wife and small children since the Confederate Army was beginning to draft older men and his wife, who suffered from RA, would not have been able to live on their farm with the young children. He was moving them near her family in case he was drafted. A wagon wheel broke on the way and he repaired it in a cold rain and he was sick by the time they reached Murphy, NC. The doctor and his wife took them in but David got penumonia and died and was buried in a church cemetery in Murphy. His wife and children stayed with the Dr and his wife until several of Lovina's brothers were able to travel from Alexander County on horseback to bring her and the children the rest of the way to Alexander County in their wagon. Lovina lived there the rest of her life and is buried at Salem Lutheran Church with family members. One of my uncles took our uncle, Jim McRee (David and Lovina's son), back to Murphy years ago so Jim could show him where his Dad had been buried. Jim was 7-8 years old when they made the trip in 1860. They were able to find the rock the family had used for a headstone. As far as I know, a proper headstone has never been placed on his grave. Ironically, my husband and my mother and I drove to Ducktown, TN from here in Atlanta one holiday weekend and there were no McRee listings in the Ducktown phone book even though David McRee had several sons from his first marriage who were grown and married and owned farms and already drafted in the the Confederate army when Daivd and Lovina left Ducktown. David knew that his daughters-in-law had their own families and farms to run till their husbands came back from the war so he knew he could not ask them to also care for Lovina and their young children. We were in hopes that some of those McRees were still in the Ducktown area, but they were not in the phone book and that was before the days of Google. When we left Ducktown, we drove to Murphy NC and made the trip in a little more than an hour when it had taken several months for David and his family to make it by wagon."
