Notes |
- ECW, pp. 5-6: Thomas Lane Malinda's father "ran a ferry across the Ohio River" between Kentucky and Indiana. "After David's marriage to Malinda, they lived for seven years in Harrison County, IN. In 1828 they moved to Putnam County, IN and settled on the walnut River where he went into a partnership with his brother, James Edward Barnett, in the distilling business from 1830 to 1834. From 1834 to 1842, these two brothers formed another partnership and built a water powered grain mill on the Walnut River. this mill was the inspriation for Paul Pickett's poem, 'The Old Barnett Mill.' . . . [6]
Both brothers also owned farm land in Putnam County. David and Malinda made a settlement for property 20 July 1839 and again 17 Dec 1846. The 1840 Census showed David living on a farm between his father James Otio Barnett and his brother John Barnett.
In the winter of 1844 David and his brother James Edward Barnett started for Louisville KY to market 500 hogs. When they arrived, they found the market so poor they decided to butcher the hogs and take [the meat] down the river to New Orleans. They butchered and salted 50 hogs a day and in December, with the Ohio River full of ice, they started for New Orleans.
Before leaving they sent their mother-in-law, Ann Lane, back to Putnam county to stay with Malinda and Elias (the two lane sisters had married the Barnett brothers); both women were expecting babies at the time. After marketing the salted hams at New Orleans, the brothers returned on horseback and arrived in Putnam County the last day of February 1845. David's sixth child was born while David was on this marketing journey. . . .
David moved his family to Illinois in 1863."
