Notes |
- The information in Lillian A. Sheppard, "Sheppard-Marshall and Allied Families: . . . Graves . . . and Many Others (San Jose CA, 1974), "III. Mary Ann Graves . . . Married Stephen A. Lowdermilk," was corrected and updated (although both authors noted certain conflicts in evidence) by entries in:
"Descendants of John Graves of Randolph County," NC:
http://www.gravesfa.org/gen077.htm
". . . Mary Ann Graves (13) was born 5 April 1793 in Randolph Co., NC, and died 10 Oct. 1831, while enroute from NC to Indiana by horseback train (soon after the group had crossed the border of either Ohio or Indiana), and was buried by the roadside in either Ohio or Indiana.
She married Stephen A. Lowdermilk, son of John Harrison Lowdermilk and his first wife Mary Elliott, on 25 June 1812 in Randolph Co., NC. He was born 15 May 1793 in Randolph Co., near Asheboro, died 15 Sept. 1872 near Ashboro in Clay Co., IN, and was buried in Cade Cem., Perry Twp., Clay Co., IN. Ashboro, IN and the Mt. Olive Church near there were supposedly named by Stephen and his son William for the town and church near their NC home.
An old record says 'John Lowdermilk was a large slave holder and on account of Stephen's anti-slavery convictions he was disinherited by his parents.'
All the children of Mary Ann and Stephen were born in Randolph Co., NC.
On arriving in Indiana, Stephen first settled on the Eel River, but shortly afterwards moved to Jackson township, section 29, and built a cabin. He later went on foot to Vincennes, IN, to enter his first 40 acres of land from the government, and he added more later, making a total of 150 acres.
It was at this time he met and married his second wife, Mrs. Sarah (????) Bolin, widow of Richard T. Bolin, about 1838 in Clay Co., IN. Sarah was born 3 Oct. 1803, died 9 Sept. 1871, and was buried in Union Cem. He was an active Methodist, his cabin being used for the first church services. For 23 years he was a Justice of the Peace, without having a single judgement reversed. He was a life-long supporter of Republican principles and was importantly connected with the organization of the county and township.
He and Sarah had four children, and their eldest son, Calvin, was reared on the farm and obtained but little education.
Stephen A. Lowdermilk was recorded on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses in Clay Co., IN. A James W. Lowdermilk, age 19, born Indiana, was listed with the family in 1850. It is unclear whether he was the last child of Mary and Stephen; subsequent censuses list a James W. Boling, b.c. 1831 in Indiana, who may be a son of Stephen?s second wife Sarah by her first marriage. James W. Boling?s children married into the next generation of Graves? descendants so Boling?s descendants are listed in the genealogy for clarity. (R-6, R-9, R-201, R-210)
