Notes |
- Maria Vernon Allen was the oldest child of William Harrison Vernon and Eliza McKray Vernon. C. T. (Tom) Vernon remembers her well as one of his favorite relatives. When Tom was a child, he always took every oportunity to see his Aunt Maria, who was in her 90's, when she came to visit her sister, Edith Hickenbottom, in Fairfield, Iowa in the 1930's. Please note that her first name was pronounced with a long "i," as in the well known song, "They Called The Wind Mar-i-a." Aunt Maria always had a twinkle in her eye and a great sense of humor. She was a great booster of the Vernon family. She would talk about the family with Aunt Edie, and they would rave about how "pretty" the Vernon men were. That was the way they talked in those days.
