- Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri (1888)"
p. 344:
"The Seventy-ninth Regiment was organized in June 1863, in Scott and Mississippi Counties; Henry J. Deal was Colonel; . . . The captains were: Company A-Edwin P. Deal . . ." [Perhaps the namesake of Edwin Peter Deal, then age four.]
pp. 969-970:
"Edwin P. Deal was reared in Charleston, MO and received a good education in the common schools. In 1874 he entered the Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg, remaining one year. In 1876 he received the appointment of cadet midshipman of the Naval School at Annapolis, which position he held about three years, when his eyesight began to fail him, and he came home on sick-leave, after which he resigned. Upon his return to Charleston, in September, 1879, he united in marriage with Mary Crenshaw. The next year he engaged in farming and dealt extensively in fine stock and real estate. He owned about 1,800 acres of good land. He also held the office of city councilman for two years. Politically he was a Democrat. (Note: He gratuated from Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg, PA, the same as other members of his family, including a cousin, Edwin J. Diehl (German spelling)."

"Edwin P. Deal, 23rd State Treasurer: 1913-1917. . . . He was county treasurer and county collector, and was appointed a member of the Swamp Land Commission by Governor William Joel Stone in 1895, serving as secretary of that commission. Mr. Deal represented Mississippi County in the 44th through 46th General Assemblies, and was chairman of the House Appropriation Committee in the 46th General Assembly. He received the Democratic nomination for state treasurer on Aug. 6, 1912, and was elected to the office in November. The salaries of the state treasurer and employees remained the same as his predecessor, however he added another bookkeeper, making a total of seven employees.
He married Mary Crenshaw on Sept. 3, 1879. They had two children. Mr. Deal died at Charleston on 10 Dec 1945."
