    Notes
    • Hal worked his way through college and received his BS degree in chemistry at the University of Illinois. He then volunteered for service during World War II. Because of his ham radio expertise, he found himself in the Signal Corps attached to the Air Forces. He did research and development in RADAR at the University of Chicago and at MIT and several Air Force bases.

After the war, he worked at Quaker Oats Research Labs in Chicago doing research on fungicides and ultrasonics. While there, he was given the choice of becoming the plant manager at Quaker's facility at St. Joseph, Missouri.

But Hal always wanted to be an MD, so he applied in person at two medical schools in Chicago and was told that this was July and the incoming classes had been selected for September and that there was a long waiting list." He was about to leave the Chicago Medical School premises when the secretary called him back and said, "someone had just dropped out of the incoming freshmen class and let's see if the Dean is available." Hal and the Dean had a long conversation and then the Dean said, "My boy, you're in." WOW!!

Hal married Virginia while he was in medical school. Upon completion of the four years, they moved to southern California for internship and then family practice. They had two fine sons, Paul and Ronald. Hal and Virginia were married for 24 years. She died of cancer.

Hal retired after 44 years and for the past four years has been serving as a volunteer physician at the nearby Harbor Free Clinic. Incidentally, Hal also taught for the UCLA Medical School for more than 25 years. (Note written July 2003)

Hal is happily married to Sharon, fishes when he can, hikes daily, plays tennis, and with Sharon, pays loving attention to their grandchildren. Hal met Sharon when she was a volunteer in surgery at a local hospital. He had just finished doing surgery and they eyed each other when he went to meet the patient's family. That was 23 years ago. They courted eight years and now have been married for 15 years.

Sharon had received her BS degree at the University of Oregon and then taught elementary school for six year in Orange County. She later taught Medical Terminology and Medical Transcription in the adult education system. At the present time, she diligently takes care of her two rose gardens at home, likes to travel, plays tennis, loves to spoil the grandchildren and now volunteers in Helping Hands associated with Paul Newman's camps and assisting in care of the handicapped.

Hal had the good fortune to be stationed in Macon, GA, near cousin Henry3 (Reuben’s son) for a while. Henry was a dentist, and therefore an officer (a major) with married officers’ housing. Hal was able to socialize with Henry and wife Esther, which provided relief from his Army routine.
