    1. [S13] Descendants of James Barnett and Elizabeth Keller, Erold Clark Wiscombe (ECW), pp. 3-4:.

James Otis Barnett's "wife was born 1780 in North Carolina. She was a daughter of John Keller and Elizabeth or Jerusha Barrett. Little is known [4] about her early life. Her father was German and her mother Welsh, (so stated in some early family letters.) Sometime between 1790 and 1797, the family left North Carolina and settled in Kentucky. The Kellers seem to have followed the Barnett family quite closely into Harrison County IN, Putnam County IN, and on to Wabash County IN."

Elizabeth's brother, Jonathan Keller, visited the family in Putnam County IN. Jonathan had an appointment from the Governor among the Miami nation of Indians."

    3. [S13] Descendants of James Barnett and Elizabeth Keller, Erold Clark Wiscombe (ECW), p. 4: (Reliability: 3).

After the death of James Otis Barnett on 6 Jun 1850, his widow, Elizabeth (Betsy) Keller Barnett, lived around with some of her children, but spent a large share of her time with her second son, John Wesley Barnett, on a farm which [in 1938] belonged to Jim Rollins. The house crowned a hill above the old Barnett Mill on the Walnut River near the old Barnett Cemetery.

Elizabeth (Betsy) Keller Barnett is described by some of her grandchildren, who were interviewed in 1938, as being a short, plump woman. they said she was particularly noted for the lovely button holes she made. She was very neat and always wore a kerchief around her neck and a white cap on her head. She did the dishes and helped around the house at her son John Wesley Barnett's home.

When Solomon Barnett Barnett's wife, Eliza Lister, died about 1859, it is supposed that his mother, Elizabeth (Betsy) Keller Barnett, cared for some of his little ones until he could make other arrangements for their care. She would have been age 83."

    4. [S13] Descendants of James Barnett and Elizabeth Keller, Erold Clark Wiscombe (ECW), page 3.
"Little is known about early life of James Otis Barnett. Relatives state that he grew up near the vicinity of Richmond VA and that his people were from or of English extraction. . . . The first document relating to James Otis Barnett is that of his marriage on 6 June 1797 in Washington County KY to Elizabeth Keller (Kellar).

There is a James Barnett listed in the 1800 Census return for Washington County KY. Shortly after marrying, the couple seemed to set up housekeeping nearby in Harrison County KY and lived there until the year 1809, when they moved to Harrison County IN. The farm they lived on was located ten miles from Corydon IN and five miles from the Ohio River.

In the fall of 1827, they moved their family to Clay County IN and settled on a farm near Jordan Creek. The Indiana Magazine of History, v. 56, p. 339, lists James Barnett as one of the first families of Clay County in 1830. He was living next to his son, Peter Barnett, and Mathias John Killion, a son-in-law. . . .

It is not known when they left Clay County IN, but the 1840 Census of Putnam County lists James and his wife as living in Warren Township, Putnam County. His sons David and John Barnett appear to be living nearby. In 1849 when his youngest son, Lewis, died, the widowed, young daughter-in-law, Lucretia, moved into the home of James Otis and Elizabeth Barnett with her two children, John F. Barnett, age 10, and Nancy, age 8. (1850 Census).

An early history of Putnam County (1879) states that James Barnett was an early settler of Washington Township, Putnam County IN. The 1841 tax list of this township does not list him there, but six of his sons lived there: James Edward, Lewis, Solomon, Peter, David, and John Wesley Barnett. . . ." [3]
