Notes |
- Erold Clark Wiscombe (ECW), "Descendants of James Otis Barnett and Elizabeth (Betsy) Keller" (Salt Lake City UT: mimeo, 1968): Early Settlers of Harrrison, Clay, and Putnam Counties, Indiana, p. 8:
"Peter Barnett first met Sally Lewis, (b. 1811 KY and who lived at Middlebury near Clay City IN), when she was visiting her sister at Bowling Green, IN where Peter was living. Peter had been living before 1830 in Clay City, where he had a grocery store and dry goods business. . . . Peter later moved to Putnam County, IN and resided in or near Pleasant Gardens (so named by Abraham Lincoln). . . .
Early land records of the county show Peter and Sarah buying land 16 Feb 1838. They deeded land to John W. Witty 3 Apr 1840. The 1840 Census of Putnam County, IN indicates that Peter was living near his youngest brother, Lewis Barnett, and elder brother, John Barnett, in Jefferson Township. Peter received another piece of land from his brother James Edward Barnett 21 Jan 1842. Shortly after this, Peter moved his family out west into the State of Iowa."
- ECW, p. 8-9: "Peter in 1843 sold land in Putnam County, IN as a resident of Jefferson County, Iowa Territory, but within three years he had moved to the county just west. He was a resident of Wapello County, Iowa in 1846.
At the close of the Mexican War, Peter moved to Fort Des Moines, Iowa. The year 1853 marked the 'great land rush' into western Iowa and the Hisotry of Harrison County, Iowa lists both Peter and his brother, Solomon Barnett, as entering that domain in 1853 among the first group of settlers. They took land in Section Five.
Peter kept a boarding house hotel, the very earliest in the village (Magnolia IA). It stood just north of the 'Raymond' and was operated from 1854 to 1860. Some of the early settlers told of the kind old landlady and her excellent cooking. Al Harvey, an early pioneer of Harrison County, Iowa never tired of telling of this famous pioneer place and its 'right good cheer.' (History of Harrison County, IA, p. 337). Peter was a large, heavy-set man. Perhaps [her cooking] explained why. . . .
The 1860 Census of Harrison County, IA lists Peter & Sarah living in Calhoun Township, still in the hotel business. [9] It is not known when Peter left Iowa, but family records indicate he moved on to a place near Kansas City, where he was engaged in the grocery and dry goods business. He also worked for the postal department. . . ."
