Clark played a silver clarinet in the band in high school and college. Because he was in the band, Clark and Merle could never go on a date to the football game, so Merle had to go with her girlfriends. Clark and Merle were married in Hobbs, 6 April 1939, with snow on the ground. Clark graduated from Texas Tech with a business degree in 1940, having attended school half-time and worked in a furniture store half-time during his last year. Moved to Hobbs in 1940, worked for Merle’s father Jesse Phelps ((JP)) Haynes driving a truck. Moved to Allred TX and worked for Halliburton; clar and Merle were living there when World War II started. Merle Elizabeth (Betsy) was born in Hobbs while they lived in Allred. Clark tried to join the Navy but failed the physical due to poor eyesight in one eye. Clark was a civilian working for the Army Corps of Engineers right after the war started. Clark and Merle moved back to Hobbs for a short time, then Clark worked in Carlsbad without housing (so Merle stayed in Hobbs while Clark worked in Carlsbad). Clark was then transferred to Pecos TX and moved there with Merle, then to Pyote TX. The war ended, they moved back to Hobbs, and Clark bought into the Texaco business with JP.

On 4 Feb 1920, Clark (27) and Mable M. (28) Jones were living at home with their son Clark E. (11 mos.) on 5th St, Wilson (Carter) OK. They owned their home and it was mortgaged. Clark is listed as being literate, but Mable is not. (Mable’s parents are also erroneously listed as both being from Nebraska.) Clark was a wage worker as a hardware store clerk.

On 11 April 1930, Clark E. Jones was living at home at 612 5th St., Wilson (Carter) OK with his parents Clark and Mabele [sic]. They owned their home and had a radio, and all could read and write. Clark E. attended school within the year.

On 16 June 1947, Clark E. Jones had an address of Box 244, Pyote TX.
