General Winfield Scott, namesake of General Scott Payne (b. 1863- )
General Winfield Scott, namesake of General Scott Payne (b. 1863- )

This painting shows General Winfield Scott (1786-1866) in his prime: a dashing military figure from Virginia, a hero of the War of 1812 and Mexican War, the longest serving general in charge of the U.S. Army, and Lincoln's commander of the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War. In 1863 when Scott Payne was born, his namesake was still a popular hero, even though he had retired from military service and was too large to mount, let alone ride, a horse. Historians credit General Scott with devising the outline of the plan that General U.S. Grant ultimately followed to defeat the Confederate forces at Vicksburg, Gettysburg, and Sherman's capture of Atlanta.
