The following obit for James appeared in the October 24, 2002 Journal:
James Floyd Nicely, 84, died Wednesday,October 16,at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abington, VA. Born July 14, 1918, in Middleway, he was the son of the late Walter C. and Dema Whittington Nicely.
He had been a plant manager for a home building industry, where he was instrumental in developing some of the manufactured methods that became standards. He later worked in the commercial building field and supervised the construction of several school buildings in Wise County, VA. He also served as Clerk of the Works for the Wise County Board of Education. Earlier, he owned and operated Jefferson Engineering and Nicely's Supply in Charles Town.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations while stationed on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. He was a staff sergeant in the Adjutant General Department, 648th RC, 28th Replacement Department in Tacloban, Leyte. He was warded the Philipine Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal, among others. He was a member of Meadowview United Methodist, where he held numerous offices and served as a substitute Sunday School teacher.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Louise Stuckey Nicely; one son, James R Nicely, Dawsonville, GA; one brother, Laurence C Nicely, Bluefield, VA; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard C Nicely; one sister, Edna W Pifer; one brother, Harry L Nicely; and two grandsons (James Alan and Daniel Lee Nicely).
Graveside services were held Sunday at 2:30 PM at Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg. Rev. James Embrey officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to Meadowville United Methodist Church, 29043 Walker Lane, Meadowville, VA 24361. Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, handled arrangements.
