"Max Leroy Modesitt, 91, rural Brazil, died at 4:19 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Staunton, as the son of Everett L. and Lena Ell Modesitt.
He was born in the outskirts of Staunton, in the home of his grandparents Jacob and Alice Ell.
The house was built around an old log cabin, which was later disassembled and moved to Fowler Park, which became the log church.
Following graduation from Staunton High School, he continued his education at Purdue University and Northeastern University in Boston.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force as a B-29 mechanic. He was honorable discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1945.
He married Wilma I. Fagg Dec. 3, 1948, in Clay County.
Max enjoyed camping and all his family functions. Farming was his life and hobby.
Max was co-founder and charter member of the Posey Township Fire Department and served as an active firefighter for many years. He was also a life member of the V.F.W., a member of the Indiana Farmer's Union, co-founder and first president of the Clay County Farmer's Union and a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Wilma, sons James E. Modesitt and wife Mary Lou, and Thomas L. Modesitt and wife Sue, all of Brazil, daughter Jane E. Loughmiller and husband Dale, Brazil, brother Robert E. Modesitt, Phoenix, Ariz. . . ."
