- Thomas Gaines Vernon served in the War of Independence. After he married in Surrey County, North Carolina in 1774, he lived in Henry County, Virginia through 1792. Later moved to Charlotte County, Virginia. According to the Manuscript File of the Tennessee State Archives, "Thomas Vernon who married Nannie Hicks served three years in the American Revolutionary War as private under Captain Joseph Mismac of Virginia Regulars ( Col. Chas. Lewis }; fought at Monmouth and Stony Point. General Anthony Wayne, wounded at Stony Point, requested his friend, Thomas Vernon, to carry him at the head of the advancing army, so that he might personally conduct the attack upon the fort. There is a further record. Thomas Vernon, pension payment Dec. 13, 1831, $8.00 per month. Last payment East Tennessee Agency, March-September 1841 to James W. Vernon, attorney fo pensioner, who had been resident of Monroe County Tennessee for 19 years and prior to that in Bledsoe Co. Tenn. Died Monroe County 1841.
