    Notes
    • Dave Howard has kindly set up a "Fictitious Common Ancestor" of the Deal, Gibbons, and Whittington families for the purpose of facilitating the comparison of several generations of these three families, some of whose members moved to Indiana from North Carolina and Virginia.

We will post to their individual pages in Dave's web site all the information (census data, pension files, wills, etc. as well as photos) about members of each generation of each family.

In the note that follows, information is being aggregated under the following subject headings for each generation:

      SOURCES, DATA, STATISTICAL ANALYSIS, INTERPRETATION

The objective is to write one narrative in which we bring together the information available for each generation of the three families. The narrative should be considered a work in progress, since it will be revised/enlarged as necessary in order to reflect the latest research.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome:

      FIRST GENERATION

      SOURCES:

There is not enough reliable documentation relating to the antecedents of the FIRST GENERATION of the Deal, Whittington, and Gibbons families, represented by "Fictious common Ancestor," to be specific about names and their relationships to succeeding generations.

      DATA:

      None available.

      STATISTICAL ANALYSIS:

      None possible.

      INTERPRETATION:

The Deal, Whittington, and Gibbons families came to the British colonies in North America well before the American Revolution.

The Diehls (Deals) left what is now Germany, landed at Philadelphia, and some proceeded to North Carolina, "west of the Catawba," where they adopted the spelling, "Deal." The Catawba River Valley, Rowan County NC, became in 1777: Burke County NC, and became in 1779: Lincoln County NC, and finally in 1842: Catawba County, NC.

Whittington families left England for Maryland, some settling in Anne Arundel County and eventually Virginia. The Gibbens/Gibbons famillies migrated from Scotland to Ireland to Virginia.

The early generations of each family cleared virgin forests in their respective areas of North Carolina, Maryland, or Virginia, farmed the clearings, and died in those early settlements.

      SECOND GENERATION:

      SOURCES:

The information about the Deal family that lived west of the Catawba River is derived mainly from the records of their spouses, (Eaker, Germans West of the Catawba). The blood relationships between the members of the Deal family are uncertain, especially for those that share the common name, "William Deal."

      DATA:

Unknown Deal, probably b. North Carolina Abt. 1745

There were in the U.S. Census of 1790 several heads of households named Deal that lived in several counties of North Carolina, but their relationships are not known:

      Adam Deal, Edgecombe County

      Jacob Deal, Lincoln County

      Elizabeth Deal, Perquimans County

      Isaac Deal, New Hanover

      Jacob Deal, Lincoln

      James Deal, Martin

      John Deal, Perquimans

      John Deal, Camden

      Malachi deal, Chowan

      Thomas Deal, Dobbs County

      William Deal, Chowan County

      William Deal, Perquimans County

      William Deal, Wayne County

Jacob Gibbons (1745-Bef.1830) Frederick County, VA m. Abt. 1774 Sarah Unknown
      James Whittington (Abt. 1753- ) Maryland m. 10 Apr 1773 Elizabeth Batson

      STATISTICAL ANALYSIS:

      Too small a sample.

      INTERPRETATION:

James Whittington m. Elizabeth Batson in Anne Arundel County, MD, but we do not know if the couple stayed in Maryland or moved to Frederick County, Virginia. Jacob Gibbons (1745-Bef. 1830) farmed in the Opequon Valley, southeast of Winchester, Frederick, VA.

      THIRD GENERATION:

      SOURCES:

The wills of William Deal (b. North Carolina, d. 1838 Putnam, IN and his contemporary, Joseph Whittington (b. Maryland, d. 1838 Frederick, Virginia) are available.

      DATA:

William Deal b. Abt. 1770 Rowan county, NC d. Abt. 1838 Putnam County, IN, blacksmith, m. Eve Decker

Jacob & Sarah Gibbons: 3 boys 5 girls, b. Abt. 1775-1783 Frederick County, VA

James Whittington & Elizabeth Batson: at least two boys b. Abt. 1774-1782, unknown number of girls

      STATISTICAL ANALYSIS:

      INTERPRETATION:

Wiliiam Deal (b. North Carolina, d. 1838 Putnam, IN), an illiterate blacksmith and farmer, owned no land and, probably for that reason, moved his family from North Carolina to Tennesse, returned them to North Carolina, and finally migrated to Tennessee and Putnam County, Indiana. He had married about 1798 in Lincoln, County, NC Eve Decker, whose father and brothers farmed lands they owned. Five of William and Eve Deal's children were born in North Carolina and two were born in Tennessee. Like as not, this Deal family followed Daniel Boone's route west through present day Boone, NC, Mountain City, TN, Abingdon, VA, and the Cumberland Gap again into Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Joseph Whittington (b. Maryland d. 1838) first married Sarah Russell in 1791 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland and following her death, married in 1815 in Winchester, Frederick, Virginia Susanna Gibbons.

This marriage was the first in a string between members of the Whittington and Gibbons families. Susanna was the daughter of Jacob Gibbons (b. Virgnia d. Bef. 1830 Virginia), a contemporary in the third generation of William Deal (d. 1838) and Jacob's new son-in-law, Joseph Whittington (d. 1838).

      DATA:

About 83 families, of whom perhaps 30 of the principal ancestors and about 40 spouses are alive or date of birth/death is unknown.

Earliest birth is 1897; latest birth is 1941.

Births of principal ancestors by state:

      Indiana - 12, Virginia - 11, Iowa - 8, West Virginia - 7, Pennsylvania - 7, Oklahoma - 5, Ohio - 2, Oregon - 2, Maryland - 2, Illinois - 1, unknown - 26.

      Occupations:

      STATISTICAL ANALYSIS:

      Too little data.

      INTERPRETATION:

Much more work needs to be done on the EIGHTH GENERATION.
